Days 4 and 5 were spent trying to obtain their goal of reaching the top. They had to climb early in the morning before the sun came up and started to warm up the snow. Satellite message - bivi at 9000 warm and dry. A bivi is when you have to spend an unplanned night somewhere like the side of a mountain. I found out after they got back that they were very close to being swept up by an avalanche. They were at their high camp and were looking at the mountain when they saw a huge piece break off and start a large avalanche. They realized it was headed their way and only had time to dive into the hole where they stored their gear. When the snow plume had settled and they could see their surroundings they saw that the major debris that would have swept them away stopped about 40-50 feet from their camp. It was at this time that they realized how dangerous things were getting. They decided to head back down to base camp.
